When your freight rides on an open deck, nothing hides it. There is no van wall, no dock crew stacking it out of sight. It is chains, straps, binders, and the driver’s judgment holding your load to the trailer at highway speed. All of that comes down to one number most shippers have never heard of: the Working Load Limit, or WLL.
If you ship equipment, steel, or anything heavy and awkward, WLL is worth understanding. It is the difference between a load that arrives the way it left and a load that shifts, gets refused, or ends up on the shoulder. Here is what the number means and how it decides the way your freight is tied down.
What Working Load Limit actually is
Working Load Limit is the maximum load a tie-down, chain, strap, binder, or anchor point is rated to hold in normal use. It is set by the manufacturer, stamped or tagged on the hardware, and it is not a guess. A 3/8-inch Grade 70 chain, for example, carries its own rated WLL, and so does the binder that tightens it and the anchor point it hooks to.
The key idea: the WLL of a securement system is only as strong as its weakest link. A high-rated chain hooked to a low-rated point gives you the lower number. Everything in the chain of securement has to carry its share.
The 50% rule that decides your chain count
Here is the rule that turns WLL into a plan on the deck. The aggregate Working Load Limit of all the tie-downs holding a piece of cargo has to be at least 50% of the weight of that cargo.
So the math runs like this:
- Start with the weight of the freight.
- Take half of it. That is the minimum aggregate WLL your tie-downs have to add up to.
- Add up the WLL of each chain or strap until you clear that number.
- Add more tie-downs to meet the rules for length, and to keep the load from shifting front to back and side to side.
An example, illustrative only: a 9,000-pound piece of equipment needs tie-downs adding up to at least 4,500 pounds of aggregate WLL. If each chain is rated well below that, you need several, not one or two. This is why the same load can look under-secured to one person and correct to another. The number decides it, not the eyeball.
Why equipment gets chained at rated points
Big iron does not get chained wherever a hook fits. Equipment is chained at the manufacturer’s rated tie-down or lifting points, because those are the spots engineered to take the pull. Hooking to a hydraulic line, a step, or a piece of sheet metal might feel tight, but it can tear loose or damage the machine.
A few things we plan for on machinery and rolling equipment:
- Chain at rated points only. Rated points hold. Convenient points fail.
- Lower and secure attachments separately. Buckets, booms, blades, and forks get dropped and tied down on their own so they cannot swing or bounce.
- Account for direction. Tie-downs are arranged to stop movement forward, backward, and to the sides, not just to press the load down.
What this means for you as the shipper
You do not have to run these numbers yourself. That is the point of working with a partner who does open-deck freight every day. But knowing WLL exists tells you two useful things.
First, it tells you why an honest quote asks about weight and dimensions up front. Securement is planned around the real weight, so the number we give you reflects the freight we are actually hauling. Second, it tells you why a proper open-deck operation will not rush the tie-down. The chains going on your load are doing real math, not decoration.
That same care is why freight that gets refused or shifts in transit can be reworked and re-secured to spec before it moves again. When the securement is right, the load rides, and everybody wins: your freight arrives intact, the driver stays legal and safe, and the deck space gets used the way it should be.
