You loaded a skid steer, a compressor, or a generator onto a deck, and now the whole trip depends on what holds it down. Get securement wrong and the freight shifts, the load gets refused, or worse, something comes off in traffic. Get it right and nobody thinks about it again, which is exactly the point. Here is how heavy equipment gets chained down correctly, and why the math behind it matters as much as the muscle.
Start With the Working Load Limit
Every chain, binder, and hook has a Working Load Limit, or WLL. That is the load a device is rated to hold in normal use, and it is stamped or tagged on the hardware. It is not the breaking strength, and you never plan a load around breaking strength.
The rule that governs the whole job is simple: the aggregate WLL of your tie-downs has to be at least 50% of the weight of the cargo. Add up the rated capacity of every tie-down doing work, and that total needs to reach half the equipment’s weight, at minimum. Heavier or top-heavy machines need more.
An illustrative example, not a rule for your specific load:

That is the floor, not the finish line. Direct tie-downs at angles, road vibration, and braking forces all factor in, which is why real securement uses more capacity than the bare minimum.
Chains and Binders, Matched on Purpose
Heavy equipment rides on chain, not straps. Transport chain is graded, and the grade tells you the rating. The chain and the binder have to be matched: a binder rated below the chain becomes the weak link, and the whole assembly is only as strong as its lowest-rated part.
Two binder types do the work:
- Ratchet binders tighten gradually and hold tension well. They are slower to set but safer to release because they do not store and release energy all at once.
- Lever binders are fast, but they load and unload with force. Anyone using them needs to respect that snap.
Whatever you use, the chain runs to a rated point on the trailer and a rated point on the machine, and the binder takes up the slack until the chain is tight and the equipment cannot move.
Chain at Rated Points Only
This is where a lot of loads go wrong. You chain equipment at the manufacturer’s rated tie-down points, the ones built and marked to take that force. You do not hook a chain around an axle, a hydraulic line, a bucket edge, or whatever looks convenient. A chain on the wrong point can bend a component, cut a line, or slip under load.
A few habits that separate a clean load from a refused one:
- Secure the machine itself, then secure every attachment separately. Buckets, blades, booms, and forks get their own tie-downs and get lowered to the deck.
- Lower and immobilize anything articulated. A boom that can swing is a boom that will swing.
- Account for the four directions freight tries to move: forward, backward, and side to side. Braking is the big one, so the front of the load usually needs the most holding power.
- Re-check tension after the first stretch of road. Chains settle as the load shakes down, and a binder that was tight at the yard can go slack in the first hour.
